Japanese PM calls for UN Security Council reform over Russia

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called for a reform of the UN Security Council in connection with Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, Kyodo news agency reported.

The statement was made at the congress of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, the report said. The source does not provide details of Kishida’s statement.

Earlier, Tokyo announced a freeze on the assets of 7 Russian banks, and restrictions on the export of high-tech products to the Russian Federation are currently being considered, as well as freezing the assets of legal entities and individuals from the entourage of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Japanese Foreign Ministry raised the level of danger of visiting Russia to the third level, and for the regions of the Russian Federation neighboring Ukraine to the highest level four, and called on Japanese citizens to consider flying out of Russia on commercial flights while they are available.

Fumio Kishida became Prime Minister of Japan in October 2021, and in November the composition of the Cabinet was approved by the Emperor of Japan.
