The collapse of the birth rate in Japan led to the cessation of production lines of baby diapers for local companies, and they were satisfied with production outside the borders for other countries.

A Japanese diaper manufacturing company decided to withdraw from the children’s products market in Japan due to the collapse of the birth rate in the country, and instead will strengthen its activity in the field of health protection products for adults.

In Japan, “demand for baby diapers is declining due to several factors, including a decline in the birth rate,” a spokesman for paper manufacturing company Oji Holdings explained to AFP on Tuesday.

Next September, the company will stop making diapers, after production declined by more than 40% compared to its peak in 2001, and no longer exceeds 400 million units produced annually.

However, Oji Holdings will increase its production of adult diapers in Japan, due to the increasing demand for these products due to the increasing rates of population aging.

Japan has the largest elderly population in the world after Monaco, and the number of births in the country will reach a new record low in 2023 since these statistics began in 1899 (a decline in population growth of 5.1% over one year). The number of deaths in the country last year outnumbered the number of births by two to one.

However, Oji Holdings will remain present in the baby diaper sector, but only abroad (Indonesia and Malaysia), where it intends to strengthen its domestic production and sales.

Last year, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida sounded the alarm about the country’s rapidly aging population.

The government’s plan mainly consists of enhancing financial assistance to families and improving access to day care centres.

Many observers believe that the collapse in the birth rate in Japan is also due to the strict concepts of fatherhood, work, and gender relations in Japanese society.
