Still from video

The minor son of the head of Chechnya, Adam Kadyrov, received the republican Order of Merit for the Karachay-Cherkess Republic. This is his third award in a month after the publication of a video in which he beats a defenseless arrestee, writes the BBC Russian Service.

The head of Karachay-Cherkessia, Rashid Termezov, explained the award by Adam Kadyrov’s “personal contribution” to the development of “interethnic and interregional unity, strengthening traditional Islamic values.” The official did not specify what exactly the contribution of Ramzan Kadyrov’s 15-year-old son was, but he called the boy a true patriot of the region and the Fatherland.

The day before, Adam Kadyrov was awarded the second most important award of Tatarstan – the Order of Duslyk (Friendship). The awarding of the son of the head of Chechnya “for his significant contribution to strengthening interethnic and interfaith peace and harmony” was announced by Adam’s uncle and State Duma deputy Adam Delimkhanov.

“I am very pleased that in any business ADAM gives one hundred percent and achieves visible results, always striving to be the best of the best. It is not surprising that Adam Ramzanovich’s personal and business qualities allowed him to earn another honorary award,” Delimkhanov wrote in Telegram.

Neither the head of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov nor other local officials announced the award; no decree on the award or a press release about it was published. In all national media, reports about the award were published with reference to Chechen sources; the publications did not contain comments from the regional authorities, the Agency notes.

On October 19, a deputy from Tatarstan Azat Khamaev, speaking at a meeting of the State Council of the republic, mentioned the beating of the arrested Nikita Zhuravel by Kadyrov’s son and asked his colleagues a question:

— What legal framework do we live in today?

The head of Tatarstan, Minnikhanov, then stated that the deputy’s words had nothing to do with the position of the republic’s Muslims, and Khamaev apologized for the “emotional statement.”

On October 6, Adam Kadyrov was awarded the title of Hero of Chechnya. Delimkhanov, who announced this, called him “a shining example of an exceptionally competent, comprehensively educated and purposeful young man.”

Exactly a month ago, Ramzan Kadyrov published a video in which his son Adam beats 19-year-old Nikita Zhuravel, accused of burning the Koran. In the post that accompanied the video, Ramzan Kadyrov emphasized that he was proud of his son’s action.

The publication of the video caused a wave of outrage on social networks. However, Russian authorities still refuse to comment on the video, although, according to lawyers interviewed by the BBC, the people involved in the beating depicted in the video, as well as Kadyrov, who disseminated the video, can be prosecuted under at least nine articles of Russian law .

Three days after the video was published, Kadyrov met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin. Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov refused to answer journalists’ questions about the situation with Kadyrov’s son. His answer to the question about the reasons for his reluctance to comment on what happened became a meme: “I don’t want to.”

Nikita Zhuravel, arrested on charges of insulting the feelings of believers and hooliganism after the burning of the Koran, was brought to Chechnya at the end of May on the personal order of the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin. According to investigators, during interrogation the young man testified that he burned the Koran allegedly at the direction of the Ukrainian special services for a reward of 10 thousand rubles (about $100).
