Kevin Owens and CM Punk reignited a feud on the August 14 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, trading personal insults and physical threats ahead of their Undisputed WWE Championship match in Toronto, following Owens’ return from a 17-month injury hiatus.
The collision between two of the industry’s most polarizing veterans has shifted from backstage history to active championship contention. On the August 14 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, the Undisputed WWE Championship program between Kevin Owens and CM Punk turned deeply personal, as Owens brought up Punk’s turbulent history outside WWE during a heated in-ring confrontation.
Independent Wrestling Friction in Ring of Honor
The animosity between the two competitors dates back to their respective days in Ring of Honor. CM Punk debuted in the promotion in 2002, building a reputation before leaving for WWE in 2005. When Kevin Owens entered Ring of Honor in 2005 as an up-and-comer, a clash over ring attire immediately created friction between them.
Owens, whose body type aligned with wrestlers like Mick Foley, preferred competing in a t-shirt for comfort. Punk, who placed high value on traditional ring wear, took exception to the choice. In a past interview, Owens recounted an incident where Punk confronted him backstage.

That tension spilled over onto live television on Friday night. Owens summoned Punk to the ring and peppered him with recriminations about past misdeeds, recalling how Punk berated and belittled him in front of his peers when Owens was first trying to establish himself.

The verbal sparring quickly expanded beyond their independent wrestling days to encompass Punk’s more recent tenure in All Elite Wrestling. Owens claimed that people close to Punk had turned against him, stating that every friend you have in this business hates you. That remark alluded to high-profile backstage altercations involving Punk with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks following AEW All Out in 2022, as well as a subsequent incident after AEW All In in 2023 that resulted in AEW terminating Punk’s contract in September 2023.
Owens argued that Punk’s return to WWE was not genuine, claiming he only came back because he had run out of alternatives. Punk fired back during the segment, telling Owens that being hated by losers is the price I pay for not being one of them. Punk also suggested that Owens was projecting his own feelings onto him, calling him wasted potential and a bum who avoids the work.
Championship Ambitions Complicate Friendships Across the Roster
Owens earned his title opportunity after returning from a 17-month absence due to a neck injury. His last victory prior to the hiatus was against Sami Zayn.

Upon his return at SummerSlam 2026, Owens won a Fatal Four-Way Match to secure the number one contendership. The victory immediately complicated his relationship with Sami Zayn. During an appearance on SmackDown, Sami Zayn warned Kevin Owens about his own WWE title ambitions, making it clear that his own pursuit of the championship is not stopping just because the two are longtime friends.
