The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a notification extending the suspension of sentence of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia by another 6 months. At the same time, a ban on foreign travel has been issued in the notification.

After the Law Ministry’s opinion and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s approval of this document, the Security Service Department of the Home Ministry issued this notification on March 21. In this regard, his release period was extended for the eighth time by the government’s executive order.

According to the notification, in the light of the application submitted regarding the release of the convicted Khaleda Zia and the legal opinion of the Law and Justice Department under the powers given in Section-401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, under two conditions (she cannot leave her residence in Dhaka for treatment and leave the country ) Her (Khaleda Zia) sentence was suspended for 6 months from March 25.

Khaleda Zia’s younger brother Shamim Iskandar applied to the Home Ministry on March 6 to send her abroad for permanent release and treatment. Later it was sent to the Ministry of Law to get an opinion on that application. The Law Ministry gave its opinion on extending Khaleda Zia’s release by another six months under the previous two conditions.

Khaleda Zia’s sentence was suspended from September 24 last year and the release period was extended by six months. That term ends on March 25.

Khaleda Zia has been suffering from various physical complications including arthritis, diabetes, kidney, liver, lung, eye problems for a long time. Sometimes he has to be taken to the hospital if the illness worsens.

On February 8, 2018, the court sentenced Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. Since then he was in jail for almost two years. Later, when the outbreak of the pandemic Corona virus increased, on March 25, 2020 former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s sentence was suspended and she was released by an executive order of the government on two conditions. The first of these is that he should receive treatment from home. The second condition is that he cannot go abroad. He was then released for 6 months at the request of his family amid the coronavirus pandemic. Since then, his release period has been extended every six months on the plea of ​​the family.
