Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) has proposed a change to the Basic Law in order to put benefits for asylum seekers on a new basis. This must apply, for example, to the planned introduction of payment cards for asylum seekers, said Kretschmer on Friday in the ARD “Morgenmagazin”. “In order to clarify this issue – to clarify it fundamentally – an amendment to the Basic Law and other measures are needed,” he said. The previous approach was characterized by “ad hoc measures”.

Migration is “the central issue” on which the “failure or success of politics” is currently being determined, said the deputy CDU chairman. The changes to the Basic Law he proposed are about “services that may have to be re-explained in the constitution,” said Kretschmer.

Further changes would have to be aimed at “ensuring that authorities can act differently”. In addition, asylum procedures outside the European Union and return agreements with relevant countries as partners are necessary.

On Wednesday, the federal states agreed on standards for introducing a payment card for refugees. With the card, refugees are supposed to receive part of the benefits they are entitled to as credit instead of in cash according to uniform standards.

“This federal government is refusing to face the realities, and not just on this issue,” criticized the CDU politician. In view of the presumably increasing number of asylum seekers in the middle of the year, the behavior of the traffic light coalition amounts to “guilty hesitation”. At least now it is right to say: “We have to do something at this point.”
