KOLKATA: Due to the protests by the Kurmi community living in West Bengal and Odisha, demanding their inclusion in the tribal list, train services were affected in three states.
The Kurmi community has a substantial presence in states including West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Most of them are engaged in agriculture. People of this community have long been demanding that they be included in the Schedule of Tribes and that the Kurmi language be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
In this case, insisting on this demand, yesterday in many parts of the country, they took part in a rail strike; They protested by sitting on the rail. Due to the protest in West Bengal, 18 trains were cancelled; 13 trains were diverted on alternate routes.
In Odisha, hundreds of Kurmi community members staged a sit-in protest along with their families on the railway tracks. Due to this, the train traffic there was affected. Protests also took place in Jharkhand. Angum train traffic was affected due to protests blocking trains bound for West Bengal.
