From the moment I decided to follow in my father’s footsteps and enter the world of Law, I knew that I was embarking on a journey full of challenges and responsibilities. Recently graduated, just beginning my experience in the world of work, but motivated and with a deep understanding of the issues surrounding our work, I see February 3 as a date that not only honors the legal profession, but also invites us to highlight the social responsibility that entails.

Law, as with any other profession, goes beyond theory, law books and courts. It is a vocation that has a profound impact on people’s daily lives, especially in the defense of Human Rights and social justice. Acting from this perspective should encourage us to go beyond legal formalities and embrace the commitment to human dignity inherent in our exercise; It is a daily struggle in which each lawyer must commit themselves for the common good.

This is why, at the heart of legal ethics, Immanuel Kant proclaimed that it is necessary “to act only according to the maxim that one wishes to become a universal law.” This precept underscores the importance of consistency and universality in legal decision-making, an essential guide for lawyers seeking integrity in their daily practice. The legal profession encompasses various branches of activity, each contributing uniquely to the social fabric, and it is at the intersection of these disciplines where lawyers face the crossroads of deciding between the easy path and the correct one.

Likewise, the exercise must be accompanied by the intention and search to combat the deep roots of injustice. As Cesare Beccaria said, “the prevention of crime is more effective than its punishment.” The law, in its essence, is a fundamental pillar for the construction of just and equitable societies. But justice cannot be seen as an end in itself, but must be that means that ensures absolute freedom for each individual. The real challenge goes beyond the simple application of standards, it is a call to address these systemic inequalities and promote changes that positively impact the communities we serve.

It is in this context that the work of organizations such as the Justice Foundation takes on an even deeper meaning. In the defense and vindication of Human Rights and social justice, these entities become guides of hope, channeling efforts towards the construction of a more inclusive system.

Thus, on this International Lawyer’s Day, it is important to reflect on our work and renew our commitment to justice, recognizing that, although the path is arduous, it is essential to build a more equitable future for all. We must always keep in mind that, although historically the legal profession is considered a noble and respected profession, we must never lose sight of the fact that its essence lies in the ability to be defenders of the common good, beyond any status or privilege it may provide. . Practicing law, regardless of its area, is not only a professional exercise, it is a call to be agents of change, contributing day by day to a more just society that respects fundamental rights, which must be the main basis of our societies. democratic.
