“Keep your distance.” This is the sign affixed to the poles that delimit – with the red and white ribbon – the area where the sea turtle has nested Emys Orbicularis. But the sign does not say that the animal has also disappeared here. On the beach of Torre Chianca, in the Marina di Lecce, tenderness is mixed with disbelief, and pervades those who reach the Salento coast in these days of lockdown. Why was this turtle left to decompose without intervening? And why is it located in the fenced area where the eggs are marked so that they are not trampled?
