Linn Svahn is closing in on American Jessie Diggins in the fight for victory in the overall World Cup. The Swedish cross-country star came second in Friday’s sprint qualifying in Falun, only beaten by national team colleague Jonna Sundling, and thus collected twelve new World Cup points for the collection.

At the same time, Diggins was 21st in the qualifier, and does not receive any extra points from there.

Ahead of this afternoon’s quarterfinals, the distance between Diggins and Svahn is down to 90 points. Victory in the final gives 100 points, second gets 95 points, third 90, fourth 85 and so on. The best 50 get points, as the worst one in number.

Two more competitions then remain in the season: Saturday’s 10 kilometer classic and Sunday’s closing mass start, 20 kilometer freestyle.

Overall, the qualification on the women’s side was a Swedish success. A total of ten blue-yellow skaters advanced.

On the men’s side, seven Swedish teams advance to the quarterfinals.
