“Love Life” Campaign by FOPH Aims to Prevent STDs, But High Costs Pose a Barrier for Young People

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has just launched its “Love Life” campaign which focuses on tests to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis or chlamydia. Problem: screening can cost up to 300 francs, a price that is far too high for many young people.

“The condom is still important, but it is no longer the only way to protect yourself,” announced Anne Lévy, director of the OFSP at 7:30 pm when the “Love Life” campaign was launched.

This year, the emphasis is on “self-checking” to stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis or chlamydia.

Up to 300 francs

The catch is that people without symptoms usually have to pay for the tests themselves. And their cost varies between 100 and 300 francs depending on the canton and the analysis laboratory, an amount that discourages many young people.

When asked about free access, the Federal Office of Public Health answers that it provides financial support for advice and screening in specialized centers. “In Zurich, the city is currently offering free advice and testing to young people,” notes the OFSP, which says it is following this pilot project with interest.

The price should not be a barrier, argues Léonie Chinet, director of PROFA, the foundation for the promotion of sexual health in Switzerland.

“In the sexual health centers mentioned on the site love life.ch(…) there is the possibility of adapting prices or even granting free admission, especially to young people”, she recalls.
