Maha Shivaratri 2022: Shivratri is one of the important festivals of the Hindus. This is one of the most important of the eight fasts performed for the pleasure of Lord Shiva. Shivratri falls on Krishna Chaturdashi in the month of Kumbh. Shivaratri is celebrated on the thirteenth night and fourteenth day of Krishnapaksha in this month. Apart from fasting and fasting with Shiva poojas, waking up is also one of the important rituals of Shivratri. There is a belief that those who do not sleep today will wash away all their sins through this.
There are many stories behind Shivratri. The most important of these is that the bull poison that came out during the Palazhi meditation was drunk by Sri Parameswaran for the salvation of the world. Goddess Parvati held Lord Vishnu by the throat so that the poison would not enter and harm him, but Lord Vishnu covered his mouth to prevent it from coming out of his mouth. Thus the poison was frozen in the throat and from it Mahadevan got the name of Neelakanthan. Shivratri is the day on which Goddess Parvati slept and prayed to the Lord without any danger. Apart from this, there is a belief that today is the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in North India.

Fasting should be done only once yesterday. That means no breakfast yesterday evening. On the day of Shivratri, one should wake up early in the morning, purify oneself, chant “Om Namasivaya” and perform ashes. Then there should be ritualistic poojas.
A complete fast should be observed on the day of Shivratri. Those who are unable to do so can offer offerings from the temple or eat karikin water or fruit. On that day one should perform Shiva-pleasing deeds, the most important of which is alms.
It is also believed that it is pleasing to Lord Shiva to water and care for Koovalam, the beloved tree of the Lord, today. Shivratri fasting requires complete sleep at night. The next day you can take a bath and serve the theertham in the temple and leave the parana.

Chanting the Panchakshari mantra as many times as possible today will wash away all sins and purify the mind. It is also advisable to recite the Shiva Panchakshara Stotram, Bilvashtakam, Sivashtakam, Siva Sahasranama, Siva Purana Parayanam, Umamaheswara Stotram and Panchakshari Mantra devoutly.
It is good to chant Shiva Gayatri along with chanting Gayatri Mantra after bathing before sunrise and lighting the lamp. Shivashtaka can also be chanted to calm the angry Lord. There is also a belief that chanting Shivashtakam daily is good for overcoming all the crises in life and moving forward smoothly.
