New Delhi: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a scheme to address anemia and nutritional deficiencies at a cost of Rs 17,082 crore. Fortified rice will be promoted under this scheme. The entire cost of the scheme will be borne by the Central Government. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), anemia remains a major problem in India between 2019 and 2021. It affects children, women and men. Apart from iron deficiency, deficiencies of other vitamins and minerals like vitamin B12 and folic acid also persist. This affects people’s health and productivity.

Foods are fortified to combat anemia and malnutrition around the world. 65% people in India eat rice. In such a situation, rice is an ideal medium for supplying nutrients.

In rice fortification, Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK) enriched with micronutrients (Iron, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12) is added to normal rice as per the standards set by FSSAI.

Apart from this, the cabinet has taken two more important decisions. These include development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex in Gujarat and improvement of infrastructure in the border areas of Rajasthan and Punjab.

Green signal given to development of National Maritime Heritage Complex

The Union Cabinet has approved the development of National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat. This will be completed in two phases. This will provide employment to local people and promote tourism.

The first phase (1A) will cost Rs 1,238.05 crore. Major ports, Ministry of Defense (Indian Navy) and Ministry of Culture will contribute in this. The Cabinet has also given in-principle approval for Phase 1B and Phase 2. Funds for these will be raised from voluntary resources.

Phase 1B includes construction of the Light House Museum at a cost of Rs 266.11 crore. Funds for this will be provided by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships.

The project is expected to generate 15,000 direct and 7,000 indirect jobs. This will benefit local communities, tourists, researchers, government bodies, educational institutions, cultural organizations, environmental groups and businesses.

Construction of 2,280 km roads in border areas

Apart from this, the Union Cabinet has also approved the construction of 2,280 km of roads in the border areas of Rajasthan and Punjab. There will be an investment of Rs 4,406 crore in this.

The project is in line with Prime Minister Modi’s focus on strengthening infrastructure in border areas. It aims to boost rural livelihoods, improve travel and ensure better connectivity with the National Highway network.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to transform these border areas into vibrant villages with better roads, telecom connectivity, water supply, healthcare and education facilities.
