♦ May December ***

by Todd Haynes

American film, 1h53

Todd Haynes is inspired by a real American news story from the 2000s – a forbidden romantic relationship between Elizabeth, a forty-year-old, and a 13-year-old teenager, Joe, now living happily in Georgia – to brilliantly question pretense. May December features two complex women, Elizabeth (Julianne Moore) and Gracie (Natalie Portman), who disrupt each other’s daily lives by coming to immerse themselves in it to tell their love story and its secrets in the cinema.

♦ Captives **

by Arnaud des Pallières

French film, 1h50

Inspired by “Bal des Folles”, a novel by Victoria Mas, adapted into a film in 2021 by Mélanie Laurent, filmmaker Arnaud des Pallières takes his camera into the famous women’s asylum at the Salpêtrière hospital. Radical in the staging and rich by a cast of strong women, Mélanie Thierry, accompanied by Josiane Balasko, Marina Foïs, Dominique Frot and Carole Bouquet, Captives is deliberately excessive and disturbing.

♦ The Last of the Jews **

by Noé Debré

French film, 1h30

Noé Debré signs a comedy tinged with melancholy which is about the departure of Jews from working-class neighborhoods. Ruben Bellisha, a 27-year-old teenager always ready to laugh and entertain, will do everything possible to get his sick mother (Agnès Jaoui) and him to move from their neighborhood to Jerusalem. The lightness of the film, brought in particular by the presence of the young actor Michael Zindel, and the call for reconciliation between the different communities are all the more important in the current context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
