According to Map data, in the first nine months of 2023 meat production in Spain reached 5.5 million tons, which is why it dropped by 144,027 tons compared to the same period in 2022, with a drop of 2.6%. In recent years, meat production in Spain had not stopped growing, but this upward trend was maintained only until 2021. In 2022, the change occurred and production fell by 1.8% to 7, 6 million tons, while 2023 also looks set to close with a decline that could even be greater than 2022.

By type of meat, from January to September 2023, all have decreased except for poultry. In 2022, on the contrary, there was an increase in the production of cattle and goats and the maintenance of the production of poultry. In pork, which is the most produced meat, with 65% of the total, a decrease of 4% has been recorded. In this sector it rains over wet, because in 2022 it was reduced by 3%. The reduction in pig production is a trend across the EU. The PPP, lower demand from Asian markets and inflation are some of the causes of this decline.

Growth in the poultry sector

In poultry, which is the second most produced meat with 23% of the total, production has increased by almost 5%. It is the animal protein that has withstood inflation the best, as it is the cheapest. In beef, which accounts for 9.4% of total meat, production has fallen by 7%. In recent years and until 2022, the production of beef has been increasing year after year, because many farmers slaughtered their animals. In the sheep sector, meat production has registered a drop of almost 10%. That of goats has dropped the dizzying figure of 23%. In the production of rabbit meat, there has been a decrease of 10.5%. In 2022, annual production was down 14% from 2021.
