United States: “If Trump was not a candidate”, Biden “not sure” of running for a second term

Less than a year before the presidential election in the United States, the confidence is surprising. “If Trump wasn’t a candidate, I’m not sure I would run,” said US President Joe Biden, who is expected to run for a second term.

Joe Biden’s campaign, currently behind in the polls, is struggling to take off. The Americans are both worried by his age, 81 years, but above all by his economic record which has difficulty convincing them. As a result, in an attempt to find momentum, Biden is setting himself up as a bulwark against Trump who is the big favorite in the Republican primary.

“Trump isn’t even hiding anymore. He’s telling us what he’s going to do,” Joe Biden said, adding of the election: “He’s going and I have to go.” If his rival withdrew, would he do the same? “No, not now”, however, swept away the president.

Trump’s tackle

For the Democratic camp and even for some Republicans, the return of Donald Trump would deal a severe blow to democracy. Liz Cheney, spokesperson for Republicans opposed to the billionaire, while promoting her book on the subject, asserts that the United States is “sleepwalking towards a dictatorship”. According to her, the former president, “told us exactly what he was going to do. He will not submit to court decisions. He will make appointments without worrying about them being validated by the Senate. He indicated that he would use the army in an absolutely un-American manner,” listed the former elected official from Wyoming.

The increasingly violent rhetoric of the former tenant of the White House has already caused a lot of ink to flow, for example when he described his political opponents as “vermin”. Or when he promised to “avenge” his supporters after his defeat, which he never acknowledged, in the 2020 presidential election.

In the press, editorialists are on the same line. American political scientist Robert Kagan believes that once re-elected, Trump would launch a full-blown “persecution” of his political adversaries and a purge of the state apparatus, deploying the army if necessary to crush any form of dissent.

Obviously, Donald Trump quickly responded. He published a message on his Truth Social platform assuring that Joe Biden would in fact be the “real dictator”.
