Proud Boys Member Convicted in Capitol Attack Goes Missing Ahead of Sentencing

Washington, D.C. – Christopher Worrell, a member of the far-right group Proud Boys, who was convicted in connection with the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, has gone missing ahead of his scheduled sentencing. According to court records and the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, Worrell is now considered a fugitive.

“We are interested in hearing from any members of the public who might have information regarding Mr. Worrell’s whereabouts,” stated Patty Hartman, a spokesperson for the US Attorney’s Office. The FBI has also released a wanted poster for Worrell, stating that he violated the conditions of his release pending sentencing.

The federal arrest warrant for Worrell, 52, was issued on August 15, 2023, by the United States District Court in Washington, D.C. The FBI has asked anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact their local FBI office or the nearest American embassy or consulate.

Worrell, who has been under house arrest in Florida, has gained attention in right-wing circles due to his health issues while in jail. Reportedly, officials delayed providing him medical treatment for a broken finger. He has also been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and contracted COVID-19 while in jail.

The sentencing for Worrell was canceled on Tuesday, and a bench warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest. Federal prosecutors had sought a 14-year sentence for Worrell, according to the government’s sentencing memorandum submitted on Sunday.

Prosecutors accused Worrell of assaulting a group of police officers with a dangerous weapon during the Capitol attack, with the intention of disrupting Congress’s certification of the 2020 electoral vote and the peaceful transition of power. Worrell was found guilty in a bench trial, during which he perjured himself, according to prosecutors.

CNN has reached out to Worrell’s attorneys for comment, but there has been no response as of now.
