When from the Fita Foundation, and within a cycle of conferences dedicated to the craft of reading, they invited the Emporda sculptor Mercè Riba to do an exhibition linked to literature or the word, the artist was surprised to think, initially, that he did not have much work on the subject. The offer, however, encouraged her to retrace the steps within her own trajectory and she not only realized that yes, letters have an outstanding weight but also that her contact with reading has been recurring over the years: from children’s comics to novels, essays and poetry. This is how he was born The pleasure of reading a sample with a dozen pieceswhich can be seen until January 5 at the Casa de Cultura de Girona, and where the visitor travels through different creative moments of Riba’s production.
“I was the first surprise”, says Riba sincerely when he talks about this immersion that has taken him to rediscover aspects of one’s own work. Among the chosen pieces there are several series, one of which he already named com To literature and which includes three pieces with three women reading.
Also the work created with his son, the painter and illustrator Dani Torrent for the edition ofEmpordoneses from last year, an altarpiece inspired by a book by Jaume Miravitlles.
Riba has also rescued the preparatory sculptures for a work he has in Sant Fruitós del Bages in the square dedicated to Salvador Espriu, “the poet, sculptor of the word”, and a dozen engraved monotypes.
To imbue the public with the creation process, which is often unknown and where many steps disappear, Riba includes the projection of videos on how the sculpture of Sant Jordi de Figueres was made and of a bronze piece, a female figure reading, which he has in a private estate in Portlligat.
