LONDON – The Crown and mourning: the weight that Elisabetta door in these hours seems almost unsustainable. Because if the sovereign elevated above the common mortals, at the same time consigned to an unavoidable solitude: in her that the monarchy is embodied, divine authority, all others are satellites that revolve around that sun. a role that knows no sharing: but in all these years, the loneliness of the queen was tempered by the presence of Philip, for 73 years at her side. The newly deceased prince was not just a husband, he was a friend, a confidant, the only person with whom Elizabeth could let go, lay down her mantle a little. My rock and my strength, he had called it: which is now gone. And these days the queen must appear to many as the loneliest person in this world.
Also why the last year had seen them reunited in a way that hadn’t happened for some time. Since Philip retired three years ago, they had led substantially separate lives: he had retired to the Sandrigham estate, where he divided his time between painting and gig; she remained busy with the royal routine, between Buckingham Palace and Windsor. But the outbreak of the pandemic had brought them back together, in solitary confinement at Windsor Castle: here, in recent months, they had rediscovered the closeness and harmony of past times. Cut off from the world, Elizabeth and Philip could count on each other.
Now the queen has no one left to rely on. And for this reason that family and court are gathering around her: yesterday morning the first to arrive to visit her was Prince Andrew, her favorite son. But one can imagine that he will be forced to keep to the sidelines, given that he is now associated with unpresentable events. Shortly after, the youngest son Edoardo arrived, accompanied by his wife Sophie. And she, the Countess of Wessex, who recently became the shoulder on which the queen could lean.
Then there are the most trusted members of staff, starting with the ladies-in-waiting. But a special role is played by her personal assistant, Angela Kelly, the woman who dresses her every morning: a person of humble origins, he has been working alongside the sovereign for almost 30 years and has gained her complete trust. Besides her there is page Paul Whybrew, who had also appeared alongside the queen in the sketch with James Bond for the opening of the 2012 Olympics.

The “bubble” that supported Elizabeth during the pandemic is still there. But nothing really like before. So, even if I continue to spend a lot of time in Windsor, the sovereign is likely to retire for part of the year in Balmoral Castle, Scotland: l that Queen Victoria had confined herself, in 1862, after the death of her husband, the beloved Prince Albert, to whom many have approached Philip. And Elizabeth also cherishes that remote refuge very dear.
