Move to consolidate weekends in the private sector in the UAE

Abu Dhabi: Private sector companies in the UAE are also planning to consolidate their weekends. Private companies plan to make Friday a working day and give Saturday a holiday. Rarely do some companies even prepare for a holiday on Sunday.

Many companies plan to adjust working hours so that Friday does not interfere with prayer when it is a working day. Schools following the government’s decision have begun to adjust their holidays accordingly. Classes will be held at the new timetable when the school reopens on January 2, closed for the winter holidays.

Some international companies are preparing to streamline operations in line with government decisions. But some companies do not agree with the reduction in working hours.

Making working hours four and a half days a week in the UAE will invigorate the labor market. The Minister for Human Resource Development, Dr. S.K. Abdul Rahman Al Awar said. The interests of investors and entrepreneurs will be protected as international transactions can be done 5 days a week. One weekly paid leave is defined in the Labor Code. The employer may decide to grant a second rest day. The private sector is also expected to come to a unified level. The new system should be modified to suit its own functions and maximized. The minister said that maximum working hours should be maintained as per the employment contract and employees should be provided with rest day, annual leave and adequate rest on Fridays.
