The scientific work of the Hubble Space Telescope has been restored, the press service of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration reported (NASA). The telescope’s two main cameras – Wide Field Camera 3 and Advanced Camera for Surveys – are operating normally.

Hubble entered safe mode and suspended scientific observations on November 23 due to incorrect readings from one of the gyroscopes, a device that determines the telescope’s orientation in space. According to NASA, it will be possible to restore the operation of the spectral classification instruments installed on the telescope by the end of December.

The Hubble Telescope, named after American astronomer Edwin Hubble, was launched into Earth orbit in April 1990. There are a total of six gyroscopes on the telescope; new gyroscopes were installed during the last maintenance mission of the device in 2009. The contract for the operation of the telescope will be valid until June 30, 2026. After completion of operation, Hubble will be sunk in the Pacific Ocean.
