New Year’s weather

Written by Rainer Ackermann

The mild weather that began at Christmas will continue until the turn of the year.

The stable weather conditions largely prevent night frosts, and rainfall is also kept to a minimum. Daytime temperatures, even on the weekend, remain very stable at around 5°C in the northeast (where the fog is likely to be most persistent), 10°C in the middle latitudes and up to 15°C in the south of the country.

According to current model calculations, the meteorologists at the OMSZ weather service expect the next change in the weather to occur on New Year’s Eve. Then a cold front brings in more rain clouds. However, the freshening wind will drive away the last clouds of fog, so that paradoxically there will be (minimal) rising temperatures, at least in the northeast. Across the country, the temperature values equalize on January 1st, reaching a maximum of 5-10°C.

According to the OMSZ, temperatures at Christmas were 6-15°C above “normal” everywhere; in Baja the highest value was measured at 17°C on December 26th. The heavy rainfall immediately before the festival (locally 60-80 mm) caused all the rivers to swell. Because the water management system intervened to regulate it as best it could, but also and especially because of the saturated earth everywhere, the water levels will fall more slowly in the next few days than initially expected. Water is now being released from Lake Balaton, the level of which has increased by almost 20 cm since the beginning of December! A water level of 120-125 cm is permitted in summer; in winter, 105-115 cm is sufficient for the ecological balance of Lake Balaton.
