Moscow: This is the most celebrated New Year in orbit in the history of human space exploration. Seven people from the International Space Station and three from China’s Tiangong space station have welcomed 2022 into space. The Russian space agency Roscosmos has announced on its website that 2022 will be the most welcomed New Year by astronauts.

Roscosmos says 83 people have celebrated the New Year inside the International Space Station over the past 21 years. Many of these astronauts have welcomed the New Year to the International Space Station more than once. Russian astronaut Anton Schkaplerov celebrated four New Years in space, 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2022.

In addition to Roscosmos’ Anton Schkaplerov, Pyotr Dubarev, NASA’s Mark Wande High, Thomas Marshburn, Raja Chari, Kyla Barron and the European Space Agency’s Matthias Morer are currently aboard the International Space Station. Hai Shigong, Wang Yaping and Yi Guangfu are based on the Tiangong Space Station in China. Yuri Romanenko and Georgi Grechko were the first astronauts to celebrate the New Year in space (1977 – 1978).
