The number of new Kovid cases in South Africa has doubled in a single day. The new Kovid variant, Omicron, was discovered last week. This was followed by a sharp rise in Kovid cases here. On Tuesday, 4373 cases were reported and by Wednesday, the number of cases had risen to 8561. Experts say there will be an increase in Kovid cases following the new virus variant.

Kovid cases are expected to double or triple in the coming days. Virologist Dr Nixie Gumed Moletsey says a sharp increase in covid cases is expected in South Africa alone. Kovid cases rose sharply in a country where only 200 cases were reported in the first weeks of November. By mid-November, there had been an extraordinary increase in Kovid cases. This was followed by the discovery of the Omicron variant.

In June and July, there was a similar increase in Kovid cases. In South Africa, 90,000 people have already died from Kovid. However, experts say it is not yet clear whether the new variant, Omicron, has contributed to the sharp rise in current cases. Genome sequencing tests have been intensified in labs in South Africa and Botswana.
