A powerful explosion believed to be caused by a gas leak killed one person and injured 22 others on Wednesday in Hebei Province, northern China, and destroyed at least one building.
“The accident has so far left one dead and 22 injured,” the public broadcaster CCTV reported, adding that the cause of the explosion appeared to be a gas leak inside a fried chicken restaurant.
According to Chinese television, the explosion occurred shortly before 08:00 (midnight GMT) in a residential area in the city of Sanhe, less than 50 kilometers east of Beijing.
CCTV reported that the accident “occurred on the ground floor of a restaurant in an old residential area.” She added, “The injured were taken to the hospital.”
Rescue teams immediately deployed to the scene, and 36 ambulances and 154 personnel were sent to assist in operations, according to local fire departments, which explained that “the fire is now under control.”
