NEW DELHI: A Parliamentary committee has recommended that ‘CCTV’ cameras should be installed in ration shops to ensure that customers benefit from the public distribution scheme.
The Standing Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution headed by Trinamool Congress member Sudeep Bandopadhyay has recommended various issues. It says: The government should conduct surprise inspections in ration shops and find out about the stock of food grains. In the food and public distribution sector, there are many complaints of consumers receiving substandard food products.
The ‘helpline’ telephone numbers set up in various states are not helpful in solving the problems faced by the beneficiaries. Therefore, the functioning of helpline numbers should be regularized to address customer grievances under the Public Distribution Scheme. Similarly, to prevent fake market sales, ‘CCTV’ surveillance cameras should be installed in ration shops, it said.
