Spectacular trial next Friday in Graz: A 29-year-old Upper Austrian killed his girlfriend and raced into oncoming traffic; Here too his victim died.

The terrible act of bloodshed shocked people far beyond the Styrian border last April: a 29-year-old Upper Austrian first killed his girlfriend (39) with numerous knife stabs in Graz. Then, while fleeing, he caused a serious head-on collision with his BMW a few hundred meters from the crime scene. The 31-year-old driver of a small, white Citroën that was coming towards him had no chance against the high-horsepower projectile; the man from Mürztal was killed on the spot. Next Friday, the suspected double murderer will have to answer to the jury in Graz. He is said to have confessed to the murder of his girlfriend – the two had a sado-maso relationship. But he denies murdering the 31-year-old. He wanted to kill himself by driving into a tunnel wall on the highway. But on the way there he became distracted: “While driving he noticed a deep, bleeding cut on his forearm. He wanted to press the injury with his right hand and ended up in the oncoming lane,” says his defense attorney Gerald Ruhri. He sustained the wound when he stabbed his 39-year-old girlfriend in her apartment in Wetzelsdorf. According to the prosecution, the perpetrator is dangerous. However, an expert contradicts this theory. The defendant is said to have deliberately steered his BMW into the oncoming lane at 130 km/h. After, according to the psychiatrist, the (sane) defendant was to be classified as dangerous, the public prosecutor also submitted an application for placement in a forensic-therapeutic center. A verdict is expected on Friday.
