In Peru, part of the Machu Picchu complex was closed due to wear and tear
Due to deterioration of the stone elements, the Department of Culture of the Province of Cusco in Peru has limited tourist access to the Temple of the Condor and the Intihuatana Observatory in the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu. This was reported by the director of the department, Maritza Rosa Candia, to the radio station RPP.
According to her, the damaged sectors suffer from daily heavy traffic, which leads to wear and tear on the stone elements. Visitors are currently unable to visit the Temple of the Condor and Intihuatana, where there is damage.
The Machu Picchu Management Committee plans to consider permanent closure of some parts of the Incan fortress. The duration of the restrictions will be determined after a technical assessment.
