Petrobras announced a “huge discovery” of natural gas in the Caribbean of Colombiawhich could double the country’s reserves when it faces a severe drought that threatens supply energetic.
It is the largest find since the 1990s, with reserves of 6 terapies cubic of gas, and “has the potential to double Colombia’s reserves,” reported Rogerio Soaresgeneral manager of exploratory assets Petrobras during an event in Cartagena (norte).
The size of the reservoir is comparable to that of the Cuchupa Field in Royal (north), which has supplied gas to the country for the last 45 years.
“It is a great achievement in the history of Colombian exploration,” added Soares at the VII summit of Oil, Gas and Energy, the most important industry event in the country.
The announcement comes after the leftist government of Gustavo Petro launch a plan to seek investments for 40 billion dollars and thus finance the energy transition of the country.
A staunch defender of the environment, the president is committed to replacing the industry linked to hydrocarbons, a sector that represents the 52% of national exports.
Petro stopped the exploration contracts of hydrocarbons to favor renewable sources such as solar and wind energy. But the opposition and a sector of the industry consider that this decision could put the energy self-sufficiency of the country.
Colombia is going through an unusual hot season, which has increased the risk of energy shortages and blackouts, experts warn. According to figures from natural gas, the national union of gas companies, Colombia It will have a deficit of this hydrocarbon in 2025.
