Health education project in municipalities with less than 5,000 inhabitants

More than 100 rural pharmacies in Castilla y León have become schools that offer training to the population on health education, addressing topics such as smoking cessation, contraception or the prevention of malnutrition.

More than a hundred pharmacy of small environments Castile and León of less than 5,000 inhabitants have become, within the framework of the Rural Health Schools Program: health education by the pharmacist, in schools that offer training in health education, addressing topics such as smoking cessation, contraception or the prevention of malnutrition.

The initiative has been promoted by the General Council of Colleges of Pharmaciststhe Council of Professional Colleges of Pharmacists of Castilla y León and the 9 provincial colleges of the autonomy, and in its presentation in the municipality of Velayos (Ávila) it had the support of the acting Minister of Health, José Manuel Miñones.

Miñones, highlighted the potential of rural pharmacies as disease prevention and health training classrooms for citizens. In addition, he reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Spain in responding to the demographic challenge and depopulation, through initiatives such as this program, which also pursues the objective of guaranteeing equal access to health services for the entire population. .

Participating in the project 109 pharmacies in small municipalities who have joined this initiative that has the support of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. The project seeks, on the one hand, to improve health education and, on the other, to promote territorial transformation, strengthening the economic and social cohesion of rural environments. Furthermore, it is based on the idea that by making essential services such as pharmacies viable, employment and other associated services are strengthened from which the entire rural population benefits.

«Saving our towns means saving their pharmacies, the closest and most accessible health resource. The green cross of the pharmacy is still there, at the service of all citizens,” says Jesús Aguilar, president of the General Council of Pharmacists. This availability of pharmacies in rural environments has allowed them to become authentic health schools with enormous value for the towns, according to Javier Herradón, president of the Council of Colleges of Pharmacists of Castilla y León.

The new program, which began during the month of October with talks on health education, and which will continue in November, will subsequently be evaluated to measure the population’s satisfaction and learning and its possible extension.

Social impact

Specifically, five large population groups have been chosen with an adapted health education program to be taught by pharmacists: older people, adults, women, adolescents and children.
