Germany consistently supports Ukraine with weapons, says Defense Minister Pistorius. But it also requires prudence and a sense of proportion.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius defends himself against criticism from the CDU that Germany’s support for Ukraine is too hesitant. CDU leader Friedrich Merz said during a visit to Ukraine that current German policy was forcing the country to defend itself with one arm tied behind its back. “I think this is infamous and dishonest,” said Pistorius at an SPD event in Hanover. Merz knows that Germany is Ukraine’s biggest supporter in Europe.

“Ukraine must continue to be supported so that it can get into a position where it can negotiate with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin from a position of strength if he wants to go to the negotiating table at some point,” Pistorius affirmed . “That ensures peace.” There should be no dictated peace. “I’m pretty sure Ukraine would negotiate tomorrow. But Putin wouldn’t.”

In addition to determination, a serious policy also requires prudence and a sense of proportion, emphasized Pistorius. “Germany may not promise everything straight away at one point or another. But we deliver what we promise, within a few weeks or months.” This distinguishes German arms deliveries from those of other nations.
