by time news

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit is being held today in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived there yesterday (September 15) evening by plane to participate. There he was given an enthusiastic welcome by the country’s leaders.

PM Modi took a group photo with them and later attended a highly restricted private meeting. After lunch today (September 16), PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with Russian President Putin, Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi. Apart from these three meetings no other meetings are scheduled.

During the meeting with Russian President Putin, Prime Minister Modi is said to talk about business and world politics. Before the Ukraine-Russia war, India rarely bought oil from Russia. A year ago, India was buying 20,000 barrels per day, but now it imports 7,57,000 barrels per day.

“At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, I look forward to exchanging views on regional and international issues, expansion of the organization, strengthening multilateral and mutually beneficial cooperation within the organization,” PM Modi tweeted ahead of the trip.

After the Kalwan attack

Prime Minister Modi also said that he is looking forward to meeting President Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan. “I fondly remember his visit to India in 2018. Also, he attended the Gujarat Summit in 2019 as a guest of honour. I am going to hold bilateral meetings with some of the leaders who will attend this summit,” said Prime Minister Modi.

While the Chinese President will also participate in this summit, the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and the Chinese President has not been scheduled yet. In 2019, after China’s attack on the Kalwan Valley in India’s Ladakh region, Indian Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet face-to-face for the first time.

Summit with two sessions

All eight member countries are participating in today’s Shanghai Cooperation Organization conference. They are said to be discussing global political events escalating with the Russo-Ukraine war and China’s military dominance over Taiwan. The conference is conducted in two sessions. One session will be a one-on-one meeting for leaders and another session will be an audience participation session.

In June 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was launched in Shanghai. At that time, six countries namely China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan started this organization. Subsequently, in 2017, India and Pakistan joined the organization as full-time members. It is noteworthy that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit has not been held for the past two years due to the spread of the Corona virus.
