Pope Francis, 86, spent a peaceful night at the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome after undergoing abdominal surgery, the Vatican said on Thursday.

“The medical team following the Pontiff’s postoperative period reports that Pope Francis spent a peaceful night, managing to rest for a long time,” says the brief statement from the director of the Vatican Press Office, Matteo Bruni.

According to the spokesman for the Holy See, the Argentine “is in good general condition, alert and breathing spontaneously”.
