In the middle of the inauguration ceremony of the new Attorney General of the Nation, Luz Adriana Camargo, President Gustavo Petro made a call exposing the need for a concerted judicial reform that guarantees the impartiality and effectiveness of the country’s legal system.

The president expressed his firm hope that the Attorney General’s Office will not become an instrument of political persecution or revenge., reiterating his personal experience in this regard. Petro emphasized that what Colombia needs is a Prosecutor’s Office that promotes justice and gives citizens confidence in the legal system.

During his speech, President Petro highlighted the importance of addressing perceptions of citizen insecurity that afflict Colombian society, pointing out that trust in justice is fundamental for peaceful coexistence and social development. In this sense, Petro urged the new prosecutor to lead a judicial reform that strengthens the search for truth, without becoming a means of revenge, but at the same time allowing an end to impunity.

President Petro also took advantage of the occasion to pay tribute to the bravery of the Supreme Court of Justice for opening crucial investigations in cases of corruption and parapolitics, proposing to award it the Cross of Boyacá in recognition of their work.

Regarding the technical aspects of the judicial reform proposal, President Petro stressed the need to dismantle the fragmentation of judicial processes, especially in cases of crimes against humanity and genocide. He proposed a concerted approach with few articles, which directly addresses the fundamental problems of the Colombian judicial system.

Finally, President Petro emphasized the importance of ensuring independence and ethics in the selection of key officialsas evidenced by his election of Luz Adriana Camargo as Attorney General, emphasizing that it is essential to prevent the Prosecutor’s Office from becoming a political instrument at the service of the government in power.
