In Germany, cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death. However, a new study has found that individuals are not helpless against high blood pressure and heart attacks. By adopting a healthy lifestyle, it is possible to reduce the risk of these diseases significantly.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, diseases of the circulatory system claimed the lives of 340,619 people in Germany in 2021. This emphasizes the need for investment in the prevention and treatment of heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure. The importance of self-care has been further highlighted by a recent study.

This study, conducted by researchers led by Dr. Christina Magnussen from the University Heart and Vascular Center of the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), in collaboration with the Global Cardiovascular Risk Consortium and the German Center for Cardiovascular Research, revealed that around half of all cardiovascular diseases are preventable. The researchers identified modifiable risk factors that contribute to approximately 50% of heart diseases.

The study found that obesity, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, smoking, and diabetes mellitus are directly responsible for more than half of all cardiovascular diseases. These risk factors can be influenced through lifestyle changes.

Notably, high blood pressure emerged as the most significant factor contributing to the occurrence of heart attacks and strokes. The study’s findings indicate that more than half of these incidents can be avoided by controlling and treating these risk factors. Professor Stefan Blankenberg, Medical Director of the University Heart and Vascular Center of the UKE, emphasized the importance of prevention and called for further research efforts to address the remaining 45% of cardiovascular diseases worldwide.

The study leaders emphasize the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to effectively prevent cardiovascular diseases. Lowering elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels play a crucial role in reducing the risk. Professor Blankenberg stated that approximately 50% of all cardiovascular diseases are completely preventable, underscoring the impact of the study’s findings on preventive measures and medical treatments.

Regular check-ups with healthcare professionals are essential for early detection and treatment of circulatory system diseases. Embracing a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and managing stress are key components of a healthy lifestyle that supports cardiovascular health.

The study, titled “Global Effect of Modifiable Risk Factors on Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality,” was published in The New England Journal of Medicine on August 26, 2023. It involved 1.5 million individuals from 34 countries and was conducted by Dr. Christina Magnussen’s research team from the Clinic for Cardiology in the University Heart and Vascular Center of the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf.
