A study has revealed that Christian priests in Germany continue to sexually abuse children.
The largest Catholic diocese is operating in the city of Mென்nster in Germany. Complaints arose that sexual crimes were on the rise during this very old diocese. Protests and violence erupted across the country demanding a proper investigation into the affair, which caused great controversy in Germany. Subsequently, the University of Muenster was authorized to conduct research on the relevant diocese. Following this, Muenster University officials, who have been investigating the diocese since 2018, recently submitted their report.
In it, shocking information is revealed that from 1940 to 2018, there have been numerous sexual offenses during the Muenster diocese. Official records of the diocese show that more than 600 boys and girls were sexually abused by the 196 priests who served in the diocese during those years. But, in fact, the study found that 5,000 to 6,000 children were victims of this form of sexual abuse. Despite numerous complaints, the diocesan archbishops did not take any action, and less than 5 percent of the clergy were prosecuted, according to university research.
It said children between the ages of 10 and 14 were the most likely victims of sexual abuse, more so than boys. This study by the University of Mென்nster has caused great controversy in Germany. The German government is consulting on the next steps in this regard.
