Title: Puducherry Deputy Governor Tamilisai Stresses “Jai Sriram” as a Symbol of Victory, Not Religion

Puducherry Deputy Governor Tamilisai, in a recent media interaction, addressed various issues including the controversy surrounding the slogan “Jai Sriram” raised against a Pakistani player during the India-Pakistan cricket match. Tamilisai emphasized that she perceives the phrase as a sense of victory rather than a religious statement.

During the meeting with the media, Tamilisai referred to former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s autobiography, where he mentioned shouting “Vande Mataram” during a spaceship launch as a show of patriotism. She drew parallels between Kalam’s act and the chants of “Jai Sriram” by cricket fans during victorious moments, stating that it was an expression of national triumph rather than a religious sentiment.

Asserting that she does not see any religious connotation attached to the phrase, Tamilisai believes that “Jai Sriram” represents the triumph of the country and should be seen purely as a word spoken in relation to the nation’s victories. By emphasizing the sense of victory associated with the phrase, the Deputy Governor aims to diminish any potential religious divide it may create.

In light of recent protests against the National Education Policy (NEP), Tamilisai acknowledged the right for students to voice their concerns. She expressed her willingness to meet with the protesting students to address their issues. Highlighting the Prime Minister’s goal of taking students from classrooms to the world, Tamilisai explained that the NEP was formulated after extensive consultation with the opinions of millions of people. Contrary to rumors, she assured that the policy aims to promote mother tongue education and is not anti-Tamil.

Tamilisai extended an invitation to girl students who have participated in the protests to meet and discuss their concerns. She emphasized that negotiation and dialogue are crucial in resolving any grievances and assured that the mother tongue will continue to play a significant role during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure.

The Deputy Governor’s statements seek to promote inclusivity and understanding amidst ongoing controversies, emphasizing the importance of unity and a shared sense of accomplishment over religious differences.
