In Russia, problems have arisen with a shortage of chicken eggs. It is planned to replenish it with supplies from abroad, including from Belarus. This topic was raised on Thursday at the live line and press conference “Results of the Year” by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

An elderly resident of Krasnodar turned to Vladimir Putin with a question about rising prices. She complained that chicken, as well as eggs, had become very expensive, already costing 180−220 Russian rubles (this is approximately 6.60−8 Belarusian rubles). She asked to take pity on pensioners, restore order and influence prices.

In response, Putin, smiling, made a joke “on the verge”:

— Believe me, I just recently spoke with the Minister of Agriculture and asked how things were going with his eggs (the cameras at that moment show the audience laughing cheerfully. — Ed.). They say everything is fine with them. To which I noted: but our citizens have problems. Height [цен] for a chicken egg 40%, and in some places even more. And for chicken meat.

He explained that the reason is that in Russia, albeit slightly, wages and incomes are growing, and because of this, demand has increased.

— It was a relatively cheap protein, and, in general, popular among citizens. “I myself eat scrambled eggs with pleasure; at one time I could cook ten eggs right away in the morning,” the politician said. — But demand has increased, but production volumes have not.

The second reason, according to Putin, is the lack of imports in the required volume. Officials should have opened it “wider,” but apparently they “expected to earn more money.” He plans to solve this problem, including supplies from Belarus.

— Now they are offering additional supplies from Turkey. They offer it from other countries, from Belarus. But they didn’t open it on time; it was necessary to resolve issues within the EAEU. The decision was made, I think, just the other day. And the situation, without any doubt, will improve. At least I hope so. Because these conversations took place with the Ministry of Agriculture at least two weeks ago. I’m sorry, I apologize about this. This is a failure of government.
