Exactly fifty-three years after the death of his father, Alessandro Quasimodo wanted to retrace the places of the Amalfi Coast dear to the Nobel Prize for literature in 1959. Starting with the Costa d’Amalfi hospital that if only he had been there at the time he could have saved the great writer and poet. Salvatore Quasimodo passed away on June 14, 1968 after experiencing a sudden illness while he was in his hotel room at the Cappuccini hotel in Amalfi. The attempts to revive him and to reach the Mediterranean clinic in Naples on board a car were useless. From that moment the long wave of indignation rose for the lack of a hospital in the area available to residents but above all to tourists who flock to the coast especially in summer.

Name the first aid after the poet

Alessandro Quasimodo, in these days in Amalfi to give face and voice to an auteur short film for the Pansa pastry shop, had more than flattering words for the emergency and first aid service that was then activated by that tragedy, visiting the departments of the hospital equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. The great impression. If only there had been this structure years ago when my father’s tragedy happened – Quasimodo told the Bishopric -. Now I have seen very well equipped wards, such as the emergency room and the hospitalization of someone in need. And again: I was speechless, with a participating heart. This is not a complacency visit: I am proud that there is this memory of my father, this garrison, this perpetuation of the memory of something that caused great uproar in its time, which prevented me from returning to Amalfi for years with a serene soul. The cardiologist Ulisse Di Palma and the emergency room manager Franco Lanzieri announced that they had asked the general management to name the hospital emergency room after Salvatore Quasimodo.
