In the vicinity of Ourense, on the banks of the Miño, there is Ramón do Casar, celler which, among other recognitions, can boast of having achieved the prize for the Best Wine of Spain in 2022, granted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. But to know the origin and the keys to the success of this family winery, you have to go back a few decades, to the middle of the last century.

An emigrant’s dream

It was exactly in 1955 when the Galician Ramón González was forced to emigrate to the Americas in search of a better future. Their destination was Venezuela, a country that, over the years, became the second homeland of the whole family. In Trujillo, a town 600 kilometers west of Caracas, Ramón opened a bakery and with the money he earned he saved and decided to buy several lands and vineyards in his native Galiciawhere he had worked as a boy. His wish was to return and set up a winery.

Already in the new century, it was his three sons, Moncho, Etelvino and Javier González Sabucedo, who were in charge of fulfilling this dream that one day their father imagined. Imbued with Ramón’s entrepreneurial spirit, they grouped all those vineyards and acquired new ones until they reached a total of 25 hectares to focus on the wine world and refloat a wine, the Ribeiro, an indissoluble symbol of the beautiful lands Galician For this reason, they had the trust of Banco Santander, which from the beginning believed in the project, as in that of so many farmers and ranchers who support their daily lives.

At first, they only produced grapes to sell to nearby DO Ribeiro wineries, however in 2013 the Ramón do Casar winery finally opened its doors. After years of conscientious work, always supported by the tenacity of the three brothers and the experience of winemaker Pablo Estévez, Ramón do Casar has become a cellar of absolute reference in the Spanish wine market, with the capacity to produce five varieties of wine and around 220,000 bottles. All of them, by the way, with labels that reproduce emotive prints about Galician emigration captured by Alberto Martín.

The best wine in Spain

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food highlighted the Ramón do Casar Nobre 2020 as the country’s Best Wine last year in its Food Awards of Spain. In addition, this wine, created precisely in honor of the patriarch of the family, who died in 2015, had already received other recognitions in competitions such as the Challenge International du Vin, the Decanter, the Mundus Vini, the Vinofed Special Prize or the VinEspaña. A success, which will serve as an impetus for the future expansion of the winery and for one international expansion who will try to reach the country that welcomed Ramón and the family: Venezuela.

As lovers of a land that saw them grow up, the sustainability is very present in Ramón do Casar’s day-to-day life. The winery has processes ofcircular economy implemented, even though the waste resulting from the production of its wine is minimal. Thus, once collected, they treat the shavings to introduce them into the vineyards as fertilizer; meanwhile, the seed and skin of the grapes are sold to a distillery for the production of pomace from Galicia.

To get here, continue to grow and continue to make Ribeiro known to the world, the winery has always had the support of Banco Santander. The entity believed in this project from the start, becoming an indispensable ally and will continue to accompany the González Sabucedo brothers in their future project.
