Sunday March 24, in the suburbs of Toulouse, Raphaël Glucksmann and the socialists will kick off their campaign for the European elections on June 9. After several solo meetings with Place publique – the small party he created – the MEP will this time be on stage with, at his side, the leader of the Socialist Party (PS), Olivier Faure, and the president from the Occitanie region, Carole Delga. “We are the only political force that can create an alternative”, estimates the socialist Pierre Jouvet, number three on the list. To convince its voters, the small team is surfing on the argument of the so-called “useful” vote in the European Parliament.

Today, the Social Democratic group, where the Socialists sit, is the second largest party in the Hemicycle with 141 seats. It is located less than 40 seats from the European People’s Party (EPP) – of which the Republicans are a part – and its 177 deputies. Becoming the first group in Parliament would have the undeniable advantage of having a preponderant weight in the choice of presidency of the European Commission, a position currently occupied by Ursula von der Leyen.

To get ahead of the EPP, Raphaël Glucksmann and the socialists want to disrupt the duel that the National Rally (RN) and Renaissance are trying to impose, with the ambitious objective of finishing ahead of the presidential party. Within Place publique, we point out that thirteen points separate the RN – given at 31% of voting intentions, according to the latest Ipsos survey, in partnership with the Sciences Po Political Research Center, the Montaigne Institute, the Foundation Jean Jaurès and The world – from the presidential camp (18%). The latter is much closer to the PS, with only 6.5 points difference and 11.5% voting intentions. “There is no match”, decides an advisor from the head of the list. Pierre Jouvet, for his part, is pleased that “everyone positions themselves in relation to [eux] ». The head of the RN list, Jordan Bardella, thus agreed to debate in a duel with Raphaël Glucksmann, on April 12, on France Inter.

“Major differences”

As for the Renaissance candidate, Valérie Hayer, she has continued to change her position in relation to this cumbersome rival. She began by trying to marginalize him, by making his candidacy useless. “With Raphaël Glucksmann, we vote 90% the same way” in the European Parliament, she said In The Figaro29 February. Before adding: “He should be with us, and he knows it. » And to be denied by the PS, which calculated that the rate was 80%. The remaining 20% reflected different political lines, notably on the common agricultural policy and the duty of vigilance, which obliges companies to prevent social and environmental risks.
