Red-green-red promises more cleanliness and a better climate

In the future, Berlin should become more climate-friendly and also cleaner – with fewer dirty corners. By 2035, a quarter of all electricity should come from renewable energies. The SPD, the Greens and the Left Party agreed on this in their coalition talks on Wednesday. “Our goal is to make Berlin climate neutral,” said Franziska Giffey (SPD), who would like to be elected mayor in December, in the evening.

Climate protection should therefore become a cross-cutting issue for all Senate administrations. A joint Senate Committee for Climate Protection is being established for this purpose. Climate protection is to be promoted through energetic renovation of buildings, hydrogen and solar technology. One of the plans is to promote solar systems for homeowners.

The city is also to become greener, for which, among other things, an unsealing program is to be implemented. “Where there has been asphalt up to now, lawn should grow,” said Green Country Manager Bettina Jarasch. “We need more fountains, more benches, more trees.” Berlin should make its contribution to complying with the 1.5 degree target in accordance with the Paris climate protection agreement. A training offensive for “climate professions” should be agreed with the trades.

Klaus Lederer from the Left Party announced that they would work towards replacing fossil heat transfer media with renewable heat transfer media. In the area of heat supply, deep geothermal energy should be tested further and the coal phase-out in Berlin before 2030 should be given priority. “We aim to end the use of coal in the Moabit power plant by 2026 at the latest and in the Reuter West power plant by 2028/29 at the latest.”

In Berlin, according to Lederer, projects for green hydrogen technology should be tried out. Solar panels are to be placed on the roofs of public buildings.

“When we talk about the noble goals of climate protection, we must not ignore the fact that our city has to be clean and worth living in,” said Giffey. “For many people, pollution and littering are an issue of the functioning city.” The three parties emphasize that they want to tackle littering in many places in the future. Bulky waste deposits should be removed more quickly by the BSR – also with free bulky waste campaigns. In addition, the regulatory agencies are to be strengthened.

Against the litter, there should be “a personal and financial increase,” said Giffey. It was not more specific. The details for this should be discussed in the next few rounds.
