Washington: A 47-year-old US citizen fell into the river from a broken bridge while traveling along the route provided by GPS. The incident took place in North Carolina, USA. The US citizen, a father of two, was on his way back from celebrating his daughter’s birthday when the navigation system led him to the collapsed bridge years ago. The incident took place on September 30 in Hickory, North Carolina.

Phil Paxson was returning home after celebrating his daughter’s birthday when his car fell into the river. Phil’s mother-in-law, Linda McPhee Koenig, wrote on Facebook that Phil had traveled at night following instructions from his GPS. The navigation system took Phil down a concrete road to a bridge that dropped into the river.

Phil drove the vehicle to the bridge that collapsed nine years ago. Even though the bridge was damaged, it was never repaired. The mother-in-law also alleged that there were no safety barriers or signs on the bridge to warn Phil of the danger. Following the crash, the North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

Phil’s vehicle was found in the creek near 24th Street Place Northeast on the morning of October 1st. Alicia Paxson, Phil’s wife, noted that a tragedy like this could have been avoided by sharing pictures of the collapsed bridge on Facebook. The bridge was in dilapidated condition since 2014. Alicia said that she had to lose her husband’s life to bring awareness to this issue.
