Roger Waters accuses Frankfurt of attacking art freedom – DW – 03/28/2023

British musician Roger Waters has accused the German city of Frankfurt am Main of “attacking the freedom of art,” according to the dpa news agency on Tuesday, March 28. “Politicians have no right to intimidate artists and their fans with performance bans,” said one of the founders of Pink Floyd. By order of the city authorities of Frankfurt, where the musician’s concert is scheduled for May 28, as well as the authorities of the federal state of Hesse, a letter was sent to the British artist to terminate the contract. Waters responded by declaring his intentions to make the concert happen: “I’m fighting for all our human rights, including freedom of speech. We’re heading to Frankfurt. Frankfurt, we’re coming!”

Waters concert in Munich could not be canceled

Recall that last week, on March 22, it became known that the city authorities of Munich could not cancel the concert of the British musician, which will be held in Munich at the Olympiahalle on May 21. There is no necessary legal basis for cancellation. The mayor of the Bavarian capital, Dieter Reiter, stressed that the musician is not welcome in Munich, but will have to be patient. Musician Roger Waters called it “good news for freedom of opinion in Germany”.

Frankfurt became the initiator of the cancellation of the concerts. Back in February, it became known that the federal state of Hesse wants to cancel the concert of Roger Waters, scheduled for May 28 at the Festhalle concert hall in Frankfurt am Main.

Waters left Pink Floyd in the mid-1980s and has been pursuing a solo career ever since. The 79-year-old British musician has been accused of anti-Semitism.
