There were a few minutes left before the start of their performance in the large theater of the Crocus shopping center. Founded forty-six years ago, the rock group Picnic is still very popular in Russia: for the concert, the 6,200 tickets for the seats in the Crocus Music Hall had all been sold and when the attackers started shooting at the crowd, a good 70 percent of the audience he was already seated.
For years, the Picnics have refused to get involved in political affairs involving their homeland and Ukraine. They played in Crimea and this made them end up on Kiev’s blacklist: they can no longer travel to the country at war. But they do not embrace Putin’s cause. We don’t give a damn about sanctions, says Edmund Shklyarsky, who has been in the band almost since the beginning. Politics comes and goes, but life remains. No one today remembers who was a minister twenty or thirty years ago, but the Picnics will always be remembered.
And again: Since our band was born, seven leaders in the Kremlin, General Secretaries and Presidents have changed; we started with Brezhnev. At the time of the USSR, Picnics were banned as a banned group. I don’t know that that list was ever cancelled; therefore, we can say that we are still here illegally.
According to the first information that emerged, there were no members of the formation or sound technicians among those affected by the terrorists in the attack.
