SAG-AFTRA Trustees Extend Health Coverage for Impacted Participants During Strike

LOS ANGELES — The Trustees of the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan have unanimously agreed to extend health coverage for certain qualified participants who would have otherwise lost their coverage on October 1, 2023. This decision comes as a response to the impact of the Writers Guild strike, which has caused job losses in the industry. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since May 2, while SAG-AFTRA joined the strike on July 14.

The one-calendar-quarter extension aims to provide relief to affected members who may have lost income due to the strike. President Fran Drescher expressed her gratitude for the decision, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the health and well-being of members and their families during contract negotiations. Drescher urged the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to return to the negotiating table and engage in discussions with SAG-AFTRA members.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, who also serves as a trustee of the Plan, expressed disappointment with the studios and streamers for putting members in a position where they have to worry about basic necessities like health coverage. While the extension offers some relief, Crabtree-Ireland expressed hope that the AMPTP would engage in productive negotiations.

To qualify for the extension, participants must be losing earnings-based or days-based coverage on October 1, 2023, and have at least $22,000 in reported earnings, or 85 alternative days, from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023. These reduced requirements acknowledge the limited earning opportunities during May and June, taking into account the impact of the strike on participants’ incomes.

Participants who do not qualify for the extension will receive a COBRA offer from the Plan. Additionally, the Plan will offer COBRA premium payment assistance, and other resources may be available through state programs or entertainment industry charities to help members find affordable coverage.

It is important to note that the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan operates independently of the union. The Trustees’ decision reflects their commitment to supporting and protecting the health and well-being of its participants during this challenging time.

As the strike continues, the AMPTP is encouraged to reevaluate their relationship with SAG-AFTRA members and work towards a mutually beneficial solution that prioritizes the needs of performers.
