Mental Health Catalonia, after learning that the new meaning of the word refers disparagingly to people who have a mental health problem, published a press release with its position. In addition to the media uproar, the federation wrote directly to the IEC and conveyed, along the lines of the statement, its discomfort and the demand for rectification and exclusion of said meaning. They quickly received a response from the IEC, thanking them for their message and interest in the institute’s work, which conveyed their position, “Normative dictionaries collect the words established in the real use of the language, and normally accompany them with indications of use”putting emphasis on the part of the meaning that says “said disparagingly”: “We understand that the indication “said disparagingly” can enhance efforts to avoid the stigmatization of people who suffer from a mental disorder. Just before Christmas, the federation contacted them again, thanking them for their response and explanations, and making them a proposal, since for the entity the tagline “said derogatorily” does not reduce the stigmatization of the group, it simply makes it explicit and thus contributes to perpetuating it. For this reason, the entity specifically indicated to the IEC: “The explicit reference to mental disorders continues to worry us and we believe that we should overcome the fact of labeling people who have a mental health problem. That is why we propose that the dictionary can refer to ‘socially reprehensible behavior’ (thus includes people with these behaviors, but not necessarily with a mental health diagnosis).”

As indicated by the federation, the IEC has once again thanked the contributions and has communicated that they will take these considerations into account. “We are aware that they are slow procedures and that various steps have to be followed internally. So, although as of today we still do not have a response, we remain waiting with confidence that the proposal will one day come to fruition. “We will monitor the process and continue to report.”says Salut Mental Catalunya.
