Sami week is underway – see the program here

MONDAY FEBRUARY 5:

On Monday, the Sami week begins to be clearly visible in the center of Tromsø as well.

From the morning you can get Sami tastings in the centre.

Best Arctic offers, among other things, reindeer feeding, sleigh rides and guided walks in the city centre. These events cost money, and can be booked here.

On the university campus a range is set upwhich will be open between 10.00 and 14.00.

There will also be a seminar organized by the research group in Sami and indigenous law. Lecture by former magistrate Finn-Arne Bieski-Selfors.

TUESDAY 6 FEBRUARY:

Tuesday is the main day itself – Sami national day. And it will be clearly visible throughout the city.

At the Radisson Blu (SAS hotel), there will be an extensive program that will last the whole day.

It starts as early as 08.00, and at 08.30 mayor Gunnar Wilhelmsen gives a speech. There will also be singing and other speakers.

The breakfast event ends at 09.30.

At 15.30 the afternoon event starts with dinner, coffee and cakes and is open to everyone. The event ends at 18:30.

At the University, there will be several mini-lectures from 10-15 – 12.00.

At UNN it is concert and speeches from 11.15 – 11.45.

At Perspektivet it will be lunch poetry with Sollaug Sargon at 11.30 – 12.00.

At 12.15 UiT rector Dag Rune Olsen, deputy mayor Sigrid Hammer and Aurora Heim from the Sami student association will give speeches. There will also be a mini-concert with Elle Máija Klefstad Bær and her band.

Aurora cinema shows the film “Je’vida” at 12.00 and 19.15. And the family film “Lundefjell – the egg that disappeared” at 12.00 and 17.15.

The cinema also offers an advance premiere of the film «Guardians of the Tundra – EALLOGIERDU» at 12.30, 18.00 and 20.30.

It’s on Tvibit at 1:30 p.m free lunch concert with Elle Maija.

In Rødbanken from 17.00 – 20.00 there is a free course with Maret Inger Gaup, where you can make your own tassels.

Breivang upper secondary school invites you to a student exhibition. Breivang is the only school in Troms and Finnmark that teaches the subject Art, design and architecture (KDA). This year, the school marks Sami National Day with a Sami-inspired art exhibition where everyone is welcome.

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 7:

From 10.00–14.00 the UiT range is open with coffee being served.

At 14.00 – 14.30 there is a crash course in Sámi Language at Tromsø Library.

At 18.00 – 20.30 Tromsø Husflidlag holds a free course for children in herringbone and embroidered brooches in Rødbanken. The course requires registration.

At 18.00 – 19.00 the lecture will be held Romssavaggi – The valley’s hidden past at Perspektivet museum.

At 20.00 – 20.30 there is a free concert with the Tromsø Academic Women’s Choir in Rødbanken.

At the Polar Museum at 19.00 – 21.00 it is Sami snow show. A lecture by Ann Kristin Balto about living in polar regions.

You can also buy more experiences through Best Arctic on Wednesday. Among other things fjord cruise on Hermes.

THURSDAY 8 FEBRUARY:

From 10.00–14.00 the UiT range is open with coffee being served.

At UiT at 2.15 pm – 3.30 pm it is open lecture with art historian Mårten Snickare.

From 16.00 – 19.30 you can weave grid weave/snjisskjot at the Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum. There will be music and Sami coffee cheese.

From 17.00 – 20.00 you can make your own tassels, the course by Maret Inger Gaup, in Rødbanken.

The university libraries will have exhibitions in connection with Sami week.

At the ice rink on the university campus there will be one lavvo that can be used.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 9:

At 14.00 – 14.30 there is a crash course in Sámi Language at Tromsø Library.

At 19.00 there will be music bingo at Driv.

During the day, there will be a book launch of Beate Bursta’s “Kofta and I” in Rødbanken. The time has not yet been set.

SATURDAY 10 FEBRUARY:

Ticket sales for Sunday’s NM in reindeer racing start today.

In Kirkeparken there will be a national championship in lasso throwing from 11.00.

Tromsø Film Club shows the film «Same blood» at the World Theater cinema at 3 p.m.

SUNDAY 11 FEBRUARY:

Today is the traditional Norwegian reindeer sledding championship. It starts at 13:00, and as work is being done in Storgata, this year’s championship will be moved to Grønnegata.
