As part of the celebrations of the 154th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, sarpanches of the Prakasam District Sarpanch Sangam, led by its founder-president G Veerabhadrachari, on Monday submitted a memorandum to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Bapuji Market Complex in Ongole. In the memorandum, he requested Gandhiji to change the hearts of the rulers and grant them village independence.

Veerabhadrachari said that the Panchayat Raj system in Andhra Pradesh is suffering from the parallel system introduced by the state government. He alleged that the government was looting the funds of the panchayats and said he requested Mahatma Gandhi to change the heart of Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and protect the panchayats in the state by providing them Gram Swarajyam.

District President Shriram Murthy said that it has been three years since the Sarpanches came to power, but the government has not stopped looting the Panchayats. He said that it is nothing but injustice that the government is not concerned about the elected leaders of its party.
