Faced with a world dominated by the great economic powers with the media that have the hegemony of influences, communists “have the challenge of showing the truth,” said the general secretary of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), Paulo Raimundo, who, As part of his visit to the island, he held a meeting on June 14, at the headquarters of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC), with representatives of the organization and the newspaper Granma.

The official, accompanied by Carina Castro, a member of the PCP Political Bureau and Pedro Guerrero, a member of the secretariat of the Central Committee of said party, stressed the importance of using the media as “fundamental instruments of political combat” focused on avoiding manipulation of the news.

In addition to the conventional media, the Secretary General expressed that it is essential to communicate through social networks without losing sight of the fact that “they are also the networks of the enemy.”

Hence, he highlighted the priority of deploying “revolutionary creativity”, of which Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez spoke, for the opening of new communication projects that are the counterpart of that hegemonic discourse. “Our resistance and our reason must bear fruit,” he added.

For his part, Ricardo Ronquillo Bello, president of UPEC, recalled Fidel when he stated that “the Internet seems invented for us,” and in this regard he added that “there are many possibilities to seize communication weapons from the enemy.”

In the case of Cuba – Ronquillo stated – the United States Government has financed the creation of a private media ecosystem parallel to the public media system. “We are facing a multidimensional war whose center is the media war.”

Likewise, the representative of UPEC talked about the relevance of the Patria international colloquium and the alliances established, since the first of its three editions, between communication professionals (designers, managers of social networks, influencers) of the world and of Cuba.

Ronquillo Bello also spoke about the so-called experiment to transform the press system, which “points towards the construction of a new press model for Cuban socialism.”

At this time – Carina Castro pointed out – the PCP works to develop and use tools that guarantee network communication that is not dependent on the technology of private companies.

From this perspective, Pedro Guerrero, who is also responsible for the Party’s International Relations department, stated that, in addition to this autonomy, it is essential to coordinate between the media and platforms that respect the right of the people to truthful information.

Fidel Castro’s thought guided the meeting when he was summoned, this time by Jorge Legañoa Alonso, vice president of UPEC. “One of Fidel’s first actions after the triumph of the Revolution was to educate the people and that is what we must do now, but in digital spaces.”

For Legañoa Alonso, among the greatest challenges posed by both the recently approved Social Communication Law and the joint work between the communist parties, is the formation of the human being, because “today it is not enough to be a consecrated communist, it is necessary to be a consecrated militant also in the networks to defend our political and social project in different ways”.

The journalists Arlín Alberty and Dilbert Reyes, deputy directors of the newspaper GranmaThey thanked the celebration of the meeting and the consolidation of the links between Cuban and Portuguese publications for future work.
